Despite the lack of matches, with fixtures being cancelled due to the arctic conditions, the hockey club have somehow managed to climb further up the league table.
Now sitting comfortably at second place, the ladies have managed to come up with some impressive high scoring wins, as well as some slightly more nerve racking near losses. The team’s ability to communicate and play to each other’s strengths is beginning to show, with some lovely set pieces beginning to pay off. We are lucky to have in our fold players such as Claire Randall and Sarah Walls, who have entertained us with some awe inspiring skills and beautiful goals. That said, we are also lucky to have some novice players, such as Eleanor Cross and Fran Raindle, who in a very short time are beginning to show not just enthusiasm but a natural skill on the pitch. There is however one weakness in our current armour, that horrible word, fitness. Dare I say it, but I think the bleep test may be in order.
With some of our toughest matches against Surbiton and Addiscombe still to come, the end to our first ever season as Old Free’s Ladies is no doubt going to be a hard fought and emotional one. And as plans are already being made for the start of next season, with the potential of setting up a 2nd XI for those who wish just to play friendly’s, I feel 2009 is going to be a good year for the OFHC. Good luck with the rest of the season ladies.
Big thanks again to our sponsors Ward & Cross.
